My colleague recently wrote that as much as he loves wines made from obscure varieties from less-traveled corners of France, he relishes the comfort of a classic grape like Pinot Noir. He should look no further than this collection, then, in which the best of both worlds come together: a selection of cuvées made from Pinot Noir—a beacon in a sea of hard-to-pronounce esoteric options—grown in unexpected places. The collection features a bright and brooding version from Alsace, a peppery example from up near Chablis, and two Pinot Neri offering perspectives on a classic from the Italian peninsula. There’s a hint of spontaneity, and a glimmer of discovery here to help break from routine, all the while staying close to home.

2022 Alsace Pinot Noir • Kuentz-Bas
Alsatian Pinot Noir hit its stride in recent years, and the world is taking notice. Kuentz-Bas’s version is laced with dark fruit and spice and offers a supple, satiny texture.

La Grande Côte is a top cuvée in Benoît Cantin’s lineup. It’s classy and herbal, from the prettiest, most characterful fruit grown on the steepest slopes. This is Burgundy Pinot at its best, mouthwatering and fresh.
2020 Toscana Rosso • Cuna
Expect fennel seed and black cherry from this Pinot Nero, age-worthy acidity, and a velvety tannin. It is one of the most intoxicating examples you’ll taste of the variety.
2020 Alto Adige Pinot Nero “Mazzon” • Ferruccio Carlotto
Pinot Nero is transformed into a weightless and perfumed rosso in the hands of Michela Carlotto and her father, Ferruccio. I open Filari di Mazzon to enchant guests who have a palate for elegant wines.
