2023 Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah
Domaine Monier PerréolThis Syrah tastes like Syrah, pure and raw, boldly aromatic with nothing to hide. Forget the idea of Syrah always being big and fruity; this one is spice- and mineral-driven, speckled with black pepper and dark hunks of dusty granite. It is nearly all terroir with a touch of tart blackberry to fill in the spaces, and I can tell it’s unfiltered thanks to the way it fills the mouth and demands to be bitten into. Serve it a couple degrees cooler than a typical red and see what this northern Rhône Syrah is all about.

2022 Saint-Joseph Rouge
France | Northern Rhône
From high-altitude slopes above the Rhône river, this Syrah exhibits remarkable purity and grace.
2021 Saint-Joseph Rouge “L’Instinct”
France | Northern Rhône
It is a real-deal northern Rhône roasted-slope Syrah that walks the tightrope perfectly between creamy fruit, meaty tannins, and fresh spine.
2020 Côte-Rôtie “Les Roses”
France | Northern Rhône
Layered and textural, this tightly bound opus will open and unfurl itself with time, be it an hour in a decanter or decades in the cellar.
2021 Côte-Rôtie “Besset”
France | Northern Rhône
From the classic aromas of graphite, black fruit, and roasted spice, to the total finesse of its tannins, this is Côte-Rôtie at its best.
2020 Hermitage Blanc “La Pierrelle”
France | Northern Rhône
From vines that are more than eighty years old comes this Marsanne with magnificent floral, pit fruit, and bitter notes.
2022 Saint-Joseph Rouge “Châtelet”
France | Northern Rhône
Hailing from a single vineyard high up on the hill above Saint-Désirat, at the middle point of the Saint-Joseph appellation, this cuvée dials up the fragrance and elegance of Monier-Pérreol’s Saint-Joseph.
2020 Hermitage Rouge “La Pierrelle”
France | Northern Rhône
Elegance and restraint from one of the hill’s lesser-known terroirs.
2022 Condrieu
France | Northern Rhône
I would say that Faury does not make Viognier, but rather one hell of a Condrieu, replete with huge apricot and peach aromas and a fresh, regal palate.
2022 Saint Joseph Rouge “Les Ribaudes”
France | Northern Rhône
This beauty is brimming and bursting with deep dark flavors of black olive, blackberry and a hint of white pepper.
2022 Saint-Joseph Blanc “Clef de Sol”
France | Northern Rhône
Round and generous on first blush and then wound up, energetic, and fine-grained on the finish, this thoroughbred wine is sculpted for the cellar but still provides a lot of immediate gratification.

When buying red Burgundy, I think we should remember:
1. Big wines do not age better than light wine.
2. A so-called great vintage at the outset does not guarantee a great vintage for the duration.
3. A so-called off vintage at the outset does not mean the wines do not have a brilliant future ahead of them.
4. Red Burgundy should not taste like Guigal Côte-Rôtie, even if most wine writers wish it would.
5. Don’t follow leaders; watch yer parking meters.
