2023 Vin de France Rouge “Cuvée de Louis”
Domaine Jolivet
Joining the ranks of celebrated Saint-Joseph domaines that have graced our shelves—Gonon, Trollat, Faury (to name a few)—is the young Bastien Jolivet. The bit of Vin de France he makes comes from a granite site of old-vine Syrah at the top of a steep hillside. Partially vinified with whole bunches, it’s then raised in neutral oak to allow its pure fruit qualities to shine. In the vineyard, work is done organically, and always by hand. Bastien is a vigneron through and through, preferring to toil in his vines more than anything else. The investment pays off in this fresh, stony, country-style rouge that’s not to be missed.

It is a real-deal northern Rhône roasted-slope Syrah that walks the tightrope perfectly between creamy fruit, meaty tannins, and fresh spine.

From high-altitude slopes above the Rhône river, this Syrah exhibits remarkable purity and grace.

France | Northern Rhône
Delicate and perfumed, it speaks softly, yet it has so much to say: lilies, bacon fat, spices... it could only be Côte Rôtie.

France | Northern Rhône
This thoroughbred wine is sculpted for the cellar but still provides a lot of immediate gratification.

2023 Ardèche Syrah “Syrah Mauve”

Young vines in Mauves, short maceration, stainless-steel aged... but definitely no simple Syrah!

France | Northern Rhône
A top site in Condrieu interpreted by one of the appellation’s masters—simply put, one of the greatest expressions of the Viognier grape on earth.

A thick perfume of dry-aged meat, smoke, and violets preface a wine that is powerful, but in perfect proportion.

France | Northern Rhône
Aromas of black pepper, briny black olive, and violets with the earthiness, herbs, and concentration of southern Rhône Grenache.

2020 Côte-Rôtie “Fongeant”
France | Northern Rhône
This cuvée is sourced exclusively from the Fongeant lieu-dit, which sits right on the border of the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, and is renowned for sharing the best of both.
About The Producer
Domaine Jolivet
Our latest discovery from Saint-Joseph comes from the talented hand of young Bastien Jolivet, working his family’s vineyards in the hamlet of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. Bastien inherited the family domaine in 2014 from his father, who sold the grapes from their five hectares to the local cooperative. But Bastien set his sights higher, eager to turn the family’s holdings into domaine-bottled, terroir-driven Saint-Joseph. In only his first decade running the winery, Bastien expanded the property to 13 hectares in total, which he works organically. The winery sits at the base of a very steep and terraced hillside where many of his Saint-Joseph vines sit. In the rare moments when Jolivet is not outdoors tending his vines, he shows a magical touch in the cellar. He has made huge strides since he began in 2014 and his wines are getting better every year. He is poised to be a rising star of the appellation.

I want you to realize once and for all: Even the winemaker does not know what aging is going to do to a new vintage; Robert Parker does not know; I do not know. We all make educated (hopefully) guesses about what the future will bring, but guesses they are. And one of the pleasures of a wine cellar is the opportunity it provides for you to witness the evolution of your various selections. Living wines have ups and downs just as people do, periods of glory and dog days, too. If wine did not remind me of real life, I would not care about it so much.
