2023 Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah “Les Hautes Ribaudes”
Lionel Faury
Lionel Faury may be best known for his sublime northern Rhône crus of Saint-Joseph, Côte-Rôtie, and Condrieu, but he also farms vines on the plateau just above these appellations. These Syrah vineyards sit at a slightly higher altitude and offer terrific values for Rhône wine lovers, creating a bright, crunchy wine that is irresistible in its youth. Lovely notes of blackberries and violets shine amidst a backdrop of granite minerals and soft brambly tannins, offering just as much lively refreshment as earthy intensity.
While great northern Rhône Syrah is perfectly suited to carnivorous pairings, Lionel’s “Les Hautes Ribaudes” is nimble enough to enjoy with lighter dishes—served cool, it complements just about anything. Consistently among the Rhône’s best values, it’s no wonder this is a longtime staff favorite.

About The Producer
Lionel Faury
Along the steep, narrow valley that traces the northern Rhône, the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph take their place among the great wines of France, and Domaine Faury is one of the region’s most artisanal producers. When Philippe Faury took over the domaine in 1979, the family was selling wine, peaches and cherries, and the bulk of their clientele was local. Over the years, Philippe increased their holdings to over 11 hectares and began to sell internationally. He shared his savoir faire with his son, Lionel. Since 2006, Lionel has taken over the reins, though father and son still work side by side. Every method they use encourages the grape towards greatness with the ultimate respect for its fragility.

When buying red Burgundy, I think we should remember:
1. Big wines do not age better than light wine.
2. A so-called great vintage at the outset does not guarantee a great vintage for the duration.
3. A so-called off vintage at the outset does not mean the wines do not have a brilliant future ahead of them.
4. Red Burgundy should not taste like Guigal Côte-Rôtie, even if most wine writers wish it would.
5. Don’t follow leaders; watch yer parking meters.
