2021 Côtes du Vivarais “Fûts de Chêne”
Domaine GalletyIf you had to erect a gate between the northern and southern Rhône, signaling your passage from one to the other, you might place it at Domaine Gallety. Here, just south of Montélimar, but on the cooler left bank of the river, Alain and David-Alexandre Gallety craft singular red and white wines that exhibit some of the defining characteristics of both regions. In addition to the cooler climate, a relatively early harvest leads to this mineral white with great acidity. Made of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, and Roussanne, and aged two years in old barrels, it strikes just the right balance of freshness and luscious volume. This blanc is perfect for porch sipping or alongside light summer fare.

2019 Saint-Joseph Rouge
France | Northern Rhône
The violets, tapenade, and juicy black fruit in your glass is much unchanged from how it’s always been (and should be).
2022 Saint Joseph Rouge “Les Ribaudes”
France | Northern Rhône
This beauty is brimming and bursting with deep dark flavors of black olive, blackberry and a hint of white pepper.
2023 Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah
France | Northern Rhône
This one is spice- and mineral-driven, speckled with black pepper and dark hunks of dusty granite. It is nearly all terroir with a touch of tart blackberry to fill in the spaces.
2020 Côtes du Vivarais Rouge
France | Northern Rhône
Aromas of black pepper, briny black olive, and violets with the earthiness, herbs, and concentration of southern Rhône Grenache.
2020 Saint-Joseph Blanc
France | Northern Rhône
Like eating lemon curd at a party that Renoir might have painted—think something like Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette.
2022 Côte-Rôtie “La Boisselée”
France | Northern Rhône
Made from six vineyards that, when blended, showcase the whole of the Côte Rôtie appellation.
2021 Ardèche Syrah “Syrah Mauve”
France | Northern Rhône
Young vines in Mauves, short maceration, stainless-steel aged... but definitely no simple Syrah!
2021 Saint Joseph Blanc “Les Ribaudes”
France | Northern Rhône
Most of this blanc was aged in tank to preserve freshness, but the little bit that was aged in oak provides a glimmer of opulence.
2021 Côte-Rôtie “Les Roses”
France | Northern Rhône
Delicate and perfumed, it speaks softly, yet it has so much to say: lilies, bacon fat, spices... it could only be Côte Rôtie.
2022 Saint-Joseph Rouge “Châtelet”
France | Northern Rhône
Hailing from a single vineyard high up on the hill above Saint-Désirat, at the middle point of the Saint-Joseph appellation, this cuvée dials up the fragrance and elegance of Monier-Pérreol’s Saint-Joseph.

I want you to realize once and for all: Even the winemaker does not know what aging is going to do to a new vintage; Robert Parker does not know; I do not know. We all make educated (hopefully) guesses about what the future will bring, but guesses they are. And one of the pleasures of a wine cellar is the opportunity it provides for you to witness the evolution of your various selections. Living wines have ups and downs just as people do, periods of glory and dog days, too. If wine did not remind me of real life, I would not care about it so much.
