One of the most expressive and transparent grapes in existence, Pinot Noir is a terroir-loving vigneron’s dream. Highly sensitive to small variations in growing conditions or vinification, it can yield countless different profiles that range from ethereal and divinely fragrant to concentrated and opulent.
This range of personalities can take place both within a single region—the difference between Domaine Bouvier’s dark and stony Marsannay and Montanet-Thoden’s bright and juicy Bourgogne rouge is night and day. But the contrasts grow even more across regions and countries. In sunny Tuscany, it might produce a succulent and spicy red that evokes plums and perfectly ripe cherries (see: Cuna’s Toscana rosso). In the cooler foothills of the Dolomites, Pinot Nero can transform into a weightless and perfumed red in the hands of Michela Carlotto and her father, Ferruccio, with notes of blood orange, black cherry, and pink peppercorns. And when blended with a splash of Chardonnay in Champagne, Pinot Noir delivers a regal and lush sparkling rosé in Paul Bara’s Rosé Brut Grand Cru.
