2016 Saint-Joseph “Les Grisières”
André Perret
In addition to making benchmark Condrieu, André Perret is also a master of Saint-Joseph, the underestimated appellation of the northern Rhône, and provides Syrahs that showcase the finesse and perfume that Chavanay is known for, along with a power and concentration more reminiscent of the southern stretches of Saint-Joseph near Mauves, or, even closer, the wines of neighboring Côte-Rôtie. André’s “Grisières” bottling could stand in quite handily for that noble appellation. Yearning for northern Rhône magic? Here you go. Pull a cork or more and see what I mean.

2021 Hermitage Rouge “La Pierrelle”
France | Northern Rhône
A thick perfume of dry-aged meat, smoke, and violets preface a wine that is powerful, but in perfect proportion.

2020 Côte-Rôtie “Fongeant”
France | Northern Rhône
From the border of the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, and renowned for sharing the best of both: structure from the Brune, with silky, floral elegance provided by the Blonde.

2021 Côte-Rôtie
France | Northern Rhône
The pinnacle of traditional Côte-Rôtie being produced today.

2022 Saint-Joseph “Les Grisières”
France | Northern Rhône

2022 Saint-Joseph Rouge
France
The greatest southern Saint-Josephs recall the wines of Hermitage, and the greatest northern examples resemble Côte-Rôtie. André’s are certainly among the finest, and always have great density despite their seeming weightlessness and elegant bouquet.

2022 Condrieu “Chéry”
France | Northern Rhône
A top site in Condrieu interpreted by one of the appellation’s masters—simply put, one of the greatest expressions of the Viognier grape on earth.

2022 Saint Joseph Rouge “La Gloriette Vieilles Vignes”
France | Northern Rhône
The roots of these vines run deep, and deep is what you get in the glass, too—a rich mix of black olive, fennel, and raspberry.

2021 Saint-Joseph Blanc
France | Northern Rhône
Like eating lemon curd at a party that Renoir might have painted—think something like Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette.

2022 Côte-Rôtie “La Boisselée”
France | Northern Rhône
Made from six vineyards that, when blended, showcase the whole of the Côte Rôtie appellation.

2023 Condrieu
France | Northern Rhône
André Perret crafts white wines of mesmerizing texture, density, and vibrant flavors of stone fruit, jasmine, tropical fruit, orange zest, and so much more.

For the wines that I buy I insist that the winemaker leave them whole, intact. I go into the cellars now and select specific barrels or cuvées, and I request that they be bottled without stripping them with filters or other devices. This means that many of our wines will arrive with a smudge of sediment and will throw a more important deposit as time goes by, It also means the wine will taste better.
