A Case for Beaujolais Nouveau

You may be wondering, Why does La Sœur Cadette make Beaujolais Nouveau when they are based in Vézelay in the north of Burgundy? Well, there are several reasons for this. First, as a winemaker, I have a particular affection for Beaujolais, its wines and especially for its talented winegrowers who, in my opinion, were the true pioneers of natural wines. Second, I am impatient by nature. I’m the type of person who reads the last pages of a book to find out how it ends. I’m not sure why, but I find it reassuring to know whether everything will turn out well or badly. To me, making Beaujolais Nouveau scratches a similar itch to reading those last lines of a story, since in France, it is the first wine to be released of the new vintage.
Vinifying and blending Beaujolais Nouveau allows me to be a little bit ahead of the vintage, to know its character, to understand its twists and turns, and to avoid the traps that are sometimes set by first impressions. I also like the challenge that vinifying a primeur wine represents; having to do it quickly and well, with the clock ticking and time becoming an adversary that must be defeated to “deliver” the Beaujolais Nouveau on time. Obviously, this challenge is made even more complex by the fact that it has to taste good!!!
