Peter Dipoli

2-Bottle Sampler

SOLD OUT
Italy is home to many beautiful wine regions, with a number of breathtaking vineyards, but few are as downright stunning as Peter Dipoli’s steep mountain parcels. In Alto Adige, somewhere between Trento and Bolzano, this native has made it his life’s work to locate the most outstanding terroirs of the area and match them to the most suitable grape varieties. The result: a dazzling Sauvignon Blanc vineyard at 600 meters elevation in limestone, and a second plot slightly lower planted in clay to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The meticulous choice of site and grape is only half the story. Peter ferments and ages the pristine Sauvignon Blanc fruit in large acacia casks, allowing the wine to breathe and acquire exceptional breadth of flavor. His Voglar bottling has ripe lemon and grapefruit aromas, expressed with the utmost elegance. Vibrant and mineral-driven with a creamy mouthfeel, this unique Sauvignon has what it takes to age gracefully, should you exercise patience with this already-delicious Dolomite beauty.
Peter gives the red grapes a more traditional, Bordeaux-influenced treatment, with vinification in large oak fermenters and long aging in oak barriques before release no less than four years after the vintage. The Iugum bottling features a sturdy mountain frame enveloped by silkenhedonistic dark fruit—a testament to this unique terroir rather than the varietals or their élevage. For such a powerful wine, the restraint and nuance are remarkable, making Iugum good for the table or the cellar.
Dipoli’s wines represent something new and unique, perfect ambassadors for this pioneer and his truly magnificent vineyards. We are happy to make the introduction. –Anthony Lynch

About The Region

Alto Adige

map of Alto Adige

In the heart of the Dolomites, Alto Adige is Italy’s northernmost wine region. Having changed hands multiples times in its history between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire (it shares a border with Austria), it boasts strong Germanic influence on its culture, language, cuisine, as well as its wines.

The mountainous geography is the principal determinant of local winemaking styles, with the high-altitude vineyards and cool Alpine climate favoring primarily crisp, racy, aromatic whites from varieties like Kerner, Sauvignon, Müller Thurgau, and Grüner Veltliner. A Mediterranean influence on climate is channeled north up the valley until Bolzano, permitting the cultivation of certain reds as well, among which Schiava, Lagrein, Pinot Nero, and Merlot fare best.

Small growers who once sold fruit to the area’s multiple co-ops are now increasingly bottling their own wines. The arrival of many quality-oriented artisans on the scene caught our eye years ago, and we now count three estates from Südtirol, as it is also known, in our portfolio. These high-acid mountain wines make for a beautifully invigorating aperitivo with thinly sliced speck, a local specialty.
