2009 Hermitage Rouge “Les Pierrelles”
Barruol / Lynch
The majestic hill of Hermitage, which yields some of the world’s greatest Syrahs, is by no means large—a mere 136 hectares, divided between red and white, must be shared among just thirty ambitious growers. Vineyard site often determines the quality of a wine, with countless combinations of soil type, altitude, and exposure. La Pierrelle, where the Syrah for this Hermitage is sourced, lies at the top of the hill, facing south-southwest with a soil of red clay and galet stones.
In the glass, this translates to a rich, ample Syrah dominated by aromas of ripe blue and black fruits. La Pierrelle’s ideal exposure is a blessing, while the stony soil helps to return the sun’s heat at night and also contributes a meaty tannin—pierrelle alludes to these rocks, and you’ll find they certainly provide something to chew on. This is a pure Syrah in all its unbridled power, possessing the finesse of its high-altitude terroir with the muscle and aging potential that this great hill is famous for.

About The Producer
Barruol / Lynch
Louis Barruol is an indefatigable force in the Rhône, the 14th generation in his family to be making wine in Gigondas. On what was once the site of a Roman villa, Louis’ cellars show spectacular remains of Roman vinification vats carved into the limestone. Here, Louis works with different grape varietals from the Rhône, vinifying each parcel separately. He’s taken to acting as a micro-négociant, working with top growers in the region who still work with Sérine. Producing only a few precious barrels of each cuvée, Louis is helping to save the authenticity and identity of old Côte Rôtie parcels. Together, he and Kermit blend our Northern Rhône wines and a Southern Côtes du Rhône Blanc and Rouge from a selection of Louis’ purchases.

You don’t have to be rich to cellar a great wine.
