2011 Barolo “Ravera di Monforte”

Piero Benevelli
Discount Eligible $49.00
SOLD OUT
It was a brisk October morning when I first met Massimo Benevelli at his winery, just outside of Serralunga d’Alba. In spite of the autumnal chill, the sun shone brightly overhead, steadily burning off the layer of morning fog blanketing the landscape. Even before tasting through Massimo’s humble, yet dignified production, the day seemed almost perfect: the snow-capped Alps loomed hazily in the distance, and a quiet murmur about town suggested the season’s first white truffles had begun to appear on local dining tables.

Massimo’s Baroli are classical, brilliantly crafted representations of what is perhaps Italy’s most distinguished red wine. He strives to carry on the work of his father, who founded the estate with a focus on the steep, well-exposed Ravera vineyard, long known to produce a powerful breed of Nebbiolo with great complexity and finesse.
Aged in a combination of enormous old botti and smaller used barrels, this Barolo possesses both the accessibility to provide immediate pleasure and the rigid spine to confer it long cellaring potential. The 2011 plays off this balance with particular flair: plush, ripe dark fruit laced with flowers and leather shows through, supported by firm acidity and a fine, grippy
tannin. It exudes loads of early-drinking charm without sacrificing age-worthiness—you’ll see that after only a few years it begins to show aromas of white truffles, just like the ones Massimo generously shared at lunch that October day. Now that a modest amount of Benevelli’s wine has arrived in our store, we encourage you to seek out this beautiful 2011 from the latest Barolista to join our team. –Anthony Lynch

About The Region

Piedmont

map of Piedmont

Kermit’s love affair with the great reds of Piemonte dates back to the early days of his career: the very first container he imported from Italy, in fact, featured legendary 1971 and 1974 Barolos from Vietti and Aldo Conterno. Regular visits since then have seen our portfolio grow to now twelve Piemontesi estates, with a strong focus on the rolling hills of the Langhe.

Nebbiolo rules these majestic, vine-covered marl slopes, giving Italy’s most mystifyingly complex, nuanced, and age-worthy reds. When crafted via traditional production methods—long macerations and extensive aging in enormous oak botti—the powerful, yet incredibly refined Barolos and Barbarescos provide haunting aromatics of tar, raspberry, incense, tea, roses, and more. At times austere in their youth but well worth the wait, they pair beautifully with the hearty local cuisine starring veal in many forms, braised beef, pastas like tajarin and agnolotti, and of course, Alba’s famous white truffles.

Surrounded by mountains on three sides, Piemonte’s climate is continental, with baking hot summers and cold winters. Nebbiolo is only part of the story here: juicy, fruity Barberas and Dolcettos represent the bread and butter throughout the region, and other native grapes like Freisa, Croatina, and the white Arneis are also noteworthy. Value abounds in the Monferrato, while Alto Piemonte also has its share of thrills to provide.

Every corner of Piemonte is rich with tradition, especially when wine is concerned. It’s no wonder we have been singing the region’s praises for over forty years.
