Southwest of Sancerre, on the banks of the Cher, a tributary of the Loire River, lies the relatively small appellation of Quincy. The sandy, silex-ridden topsoil there, with its undercurrent of pink limestone is truly unique, unlike any other Sauvignon Blanc appellation in the world, and lends itself to a very particular wine. Sauvignon is able to ripen more fully here while retaining an intriguing aromatic profile, and the wines are capable of aging quite gracefully.
In 1936, several centuries after Cistercian monks first planted Sauvignon Blanc in Quincy, this commune became the second recognized appellation in France, after Châteauneuf-du-Pape. As recently as fifty years ago, the wines of Quincy were more celebrated in France for quality than Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé, and commanded a higher price. Today the appellation has largely faded from recognition, and caves cooperatives have bought up a lot of the land at pennies on the dollar. Most growers in Quincy make simple, racy Sauvignons, expressions of the grape that can be produced anywhere. Precious few are willing or able to take the risks necessary to produce the type of wine that made Quincy famous in the first place.
For decades, Pierre Ragon of Domaine Trotereau has been one of these few—he is as much an icon of the small appellation of Quincy as the appellation itself is a historical icon for the whole of France, and we have been honored to work with him for over ten years. Now, on the verge of retirement, Pierre has found a worthy successor in a young mentee, Augustin Ponroy, who has been studying attentively by his side for several vintages now to master the art of traditional Quincy. Thanks to Pierre’s stewardship of the land, they are blessed with vines over one hundred years old that are still producing exceptional fruit. With pride and excitement, we bring you the real deal from Quincy.
