Antoine-Marie Arena rips a fistful of weeds from beneath a vine, shakes the dirt off the roots, and thrusts it toward us. My colleagues and I lean in, inhaling the herbaceous, apothecary-like scent. It’s called inule visqueuse, and it grows wild all over the rugged slope we’re currently scrambling up. Despite the blazing Corsican sun, Antoine-Marie reassures us there is plenty of water in the soil here to support his vines, along with the plethora of flora we’re surrounded by: maquis, immortelle, ryegrass, wild carrot, St. John’s Wort. We shakily continue our climb behind a quick and surefooted Antoine-Marie, whose spirit animal is almost certainly a mountain goat.
The view from the top is worth it. Standing in his newest vineyard beneath the peaks of Mont Sant’Angelo, Antoine-Marie proudly points out his other holdings amid the green and gold patchwork of the valley below. Among them, his prized Bianco Gentile vines in the San Giovanni lieu-dit. Back in the ’90s, his father, Antoine, was among a small band of Corsican vignerons who saved the indigenous grape from the brink of extinction. It’s thrived here ever since, under the dutiful care of Antoine—and now, Antoine-Marie. He typically picks his “B.G.” early, allowing him to maintain a fresh, chiseled profile and low alcohol. Too ripe, the grape will yield intensely tropical, weighty wines—this isn’t the house style. Antoine-Marie’s methods preserve minerality and offer us a more restrained expression that is lean and refreshing in its youth. With age, the nose will blossom beautifully to reveal layers of sunsoaked maquis, wildflowers, and waxy honeycomb.

Corsica

map of Corsica

I first set foot on the island in 1980. I remember looking down from the airplane window seeing alpine forest and lakes and thinking, uh oh, I got on the wrong plane. Then suddenly I was looking down into the beautiful waters of the Mediterranean. Corsica is a small, impossibly tall island, the tail of the Alp chain rising out of the blue sea.—Kermit Lynch

Kermit’s first trip to the island proved fruitful, with his discovery of Clos Nicrosi’s Vermentino. More than thirty years later, the love affair with Corsica has only grown as we now import wines from ten domaines that cover the north, south, east, and west of what the French affectionately refer to as l’Île de Beauté.

Corsica is currently experiencing somewhat of a renaissance—interest has never been higher in the wines and much of this is due to growers focusing on indigenous and historical grapes found on the island. Niellucciu, Sciarcarellu, and Vermentinu are widely planted but it is now common to find bottlings of Biancu Gentile and Carcaghjolu Neru as well as blends with native varieties like Rossola Bianca, Minustellu, or Montaneccia.

As Kermit described above, Corsica has a strikingly mountainous landscape. The granite peaks top out above 9,000 feet. The terroir is predominantly granite with the exception of the Patrimonio appellation in the north, which has limestone, clay, and schist soils. The wines, much like their southern French counterparts make for great pairings with the local charcuterie, often made from Nustrale, the native wild boar, as well as Brocciu, the Corsican goats milk cheese that is best served within 48 hours of it being made.

Inspiring Thirst

A good doctor prescribed the wine of Nuits-Saint-Georges to the Sun King, Louis XIV, when he suffered an unknown maladie. When the king’s health was restored the tasty remedy enjoyed a vogue at court. Lord, send me a doctor like that!
