I’m not sure there are any growers in Burgundy getting more out of their terroir than Jean-Marc and Anne-Marie Vincent. Having inherited a few hectares of vines from Jean-Marc’s grandfather in 1997, the couple hit the ground running so quickly that Kermit first imported their Santenays just a few years later, starting with the 2000 vintage. The wines were excellent back then, but over the last decade or so, Jean-Marc and Anne-Marie have taken things to another level altogether, fashioning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as radiant as the best of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Volnay. Chiseled, pure, and precise right out of the gate, they also boast incredible aging potential.
Jean-Marc and Anne-Marie farm their 6-hectare domaine organically and all on their own, aging their wines in a small, ancient cave beneath their home. From the beginning, they’ve been Burgundy traditionalists, but they’ve also been pioneers in a more forward-looking approach, both in the vines and in the cellar. In the vines, for instance, they have improved soil health, fully embraced high-density planting, and trained the vine canopies to grow higher, all of which contribute to flawless grape clusters and exceptional raw material for their wines.
In the cellar, meanwhile, they have decreased the amount of sulfur and new oak they use and enlarged their barrels in order to further minimize the impact of the wood and oxygen transfer. These shifts yield whites and reds that are even fresher, more charming, and transparent with respect to their terroirs. The wines have always been beautiful, but today, they are world-class.
The only problem at this hugely exciting Burgundy domaine is that we usually receive such miniscule quantities that we don’t get to showcase them widely. With the generous 2023 vintage, we got a touch more, and we are thrilled to share the Vincents’ masterpieces with you.
