2020 Givry Rouge 1er Cru “Clos du Cras Long”

François Lumpp
Discount Eligible $82.00
AT CART MAX

As I enjoyed a bottle of François Lumpp’s Clos du Cras Long over a couple of days, I marveled at how pleasing it is to drink. The nose is a heady mix of ripe cherry, raspberry fruit, and spicy oak. It feels decadent, even a bit naughty, like cashmere undies or putting truffles on everything. Each sip is full of flavor, delivering on the promise of the alluring nose and offering pure, effortless deliciousness. The wines from the Côte Chalonnaise appellation of Givry have long held “great value” status. François is entering “great at any price” status.

About The Region

Burgundy

map of Burgundy

In eastern central France, Burgundy is nestled between the wine regions of Champagne to the north, the Jura to the east, the Loire to the west, and the Rhône to the south. This is the terroir par excellence for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The southeast-facing hillside between Dijon in the north and Maranges in the south is known as the Côte d’Or or “golden slope.” The Côte d’Or comprises two main sections, both composed of limestone and clay soils: the Côte de Nuits in the northern sector, and the Côte de Beaune in the south. Both areas produce magnificent whites and reds, although the Côte de Beaune produces more white wine and the Côte de Nuits more red.

Chablis is Burgundy’s northern outpost, known for its flinty and age-worthy Chardonnays planted in Kimmeridgian limestone on an ancient seabed. Vézelay is a smaller area south of Chablis with similar qualities, although the limestone there is not Kimmeridgian.

To the south of the Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise extends from Chagny on its northern end, down past Chalon-sur-Saône and encompasses the appellations of Bouzeron in the north, followed by Rully, Mercurey, Givry, and Montagny.

Directly south of the Chalonnaise begins the Côte Mâconnais, which extends south past Mâcon to the hamlets of Fuissé, Vinzelles, Chaintré, and Saint-Véran. The Mâconnais is prime Chardonnay country and contains an incredible diversity of soils.

Sampler Includes:

2022 Vin de France Blanc Melon de Bourgogne  $32
Possibly the best rendition of Melon de Bourgogne in Burgundy, this is crisp, lively, and refreshing—a perfect match for oysters or lightly prepared seafood.

2021 Bourgogne Blanc  $45

The fruit in this blanc comes from the northern Mâconnais, which explains its textbook orchard fruit and crystalline finish. To relate to this wine, Valentin suggests you grab a barstool, a whole saucisson, and a hunk of chèvre, and post yourself at the zinc countertop of a classic French bistro for a tête-à-tête.

2020 Vézelay Blanc “La Châtelaine”  $38
La Châtelaine highlights what may be the best terroir of Vézelay and why this little appellation is on the map in the first place. With a style that hews more closely to Chablis than to Côte d’Or, La Châtelaine shows off a mouth-coating, deep, zesty, and mineral side.

2022 Bourgogne Rouge “L’Ermitage”  $42
Blending Pinot Noir with a little of the local red grape César results in a rouge unlike any other in Burgundy today. The César adds an element of dense, dark fruit and tannic structure, while the fresh, bright, and lively Pinot Noir provides fluidity and high-toned aromatics.

2022 Juliénas  $35

Sourced from an organically farmed vineyard on granite soil, this is textbook cru Beaujolais: very aromatic with loads of fresh Gamay fruit, it flows over the palate with a buoyancy that simply makes it hard to resist.

2022 Bourgogne Rouge “Champs Cadet”  $42
A gorgeous, exuberant, and versatile red Burgundy, evoking red berries, a hint of black tea, and spices.

Inspiring Thirst

A good doctor prescribed the wine of Nuits-Saint-Georges to the Sun King, Louis XIV, when he suffered an unknown maladie. When the king’s health was restored the tasty remedy enjoyed a vogue at court. Lord, send me a doctor like that!
