2018 Gevrey-Chambertin
Régis BouvierArtifacts and ancient burial sites found around the village of Gevrey-Chambertin suggest that the Romans were the first to plant vines on these now-famous slopes. Perhaps their martial spirits linger, imbuing Gevrey’s wines with the depth and backbone for which they are renowned. Régis blends several plots to produce his Gevrey-Chambertin, and there’s a beautiful woodsiness on the nose, almost autumnal. It’s not an oak barrel aroma, but a forest aroma. The fruit quality is darker and more earthbound, too, like eating blackberries in the shade.

2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “Les Pruliers”
Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils
France | Burgundy
It’s floral, finessed, and delicately detailed, thanks to vines that are more than a century old, planted in 1911.
2023 Chablis
France | Burgundy
Sleek, crisp, light, and luminous, with a steely, saline finish.
2021 Côte de Nuits-Villages
France | Burgundy
First, it is impeccable. Second, it does not exceed its appellation; it is not a substitute Romanée Conti; it is a perfect Côte de Nuits-Villages.
2021 Marsannay Blanc “Clos du Roy”
France | Burgundy
I find the Clos du Roy blanc to be quite versatile at my house in Meursault, especially with fowl, pork, and veal.
2021 Morey Saint Denis “En la Rue de Vergy”
France | Burgundy
The wine is firmly structured and robust, with dark, plump fruit that tastes fresh and utterly drinkable.
2019 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru “Les Pruliers”
France | Burgundy
Incredible elegance for Pruliers, power and finesse in spades.
2021 Fixin
France | Burgundy
Solid yet affordable cru burgundy with the structure, concentration, and complexity similar to Gevrey-Chambertin’s wine, as well as the bright fruit and accessibility of its other neighbor, Marsannay.
2022 Bourgogne Tonnerre
France | Burgundy
The perfect bottling to open alongside light, grilled cod or haddock, but if you’re like me, you won’t be able to wait until dinner is served to pop the cork
2020 Marsannay Rouge “Les Longeroies”
France | Burgundy
This single-vineyard Pinot Noir is what drinking great Burgundy is all about.
2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru “Les Corbeaux”
Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils
France | Burgundy
Of all Boillot’s cuvées, the ones from Gevrey-Chambertin are the most brooding, the most earthbound.

About The Region
Burgundy
In eastern central France, Burgundy is nestled between the wine regions of Champagne to the north, the Jura to the east, the Loire to the west, and the Rhône to the south. This is the terroir par excellence for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The southeast-facing hillside between Dijon in the north and Maranges in the south is known as the Côte d’Or or “golden slope.” The Côte d’Or comprises two main sections, both composed of limestone and clay soils: the Côte de Nuits in the northern sector, and the Côte de Beaune in the south. Both areas produce magnificent whites and reds, although the Côte de Beaune produces more white wine and the Côte de Nuits more red.
Chablis is Burgundy’s northern outpost, known for its flinty and age-worthy Chardonnays planted in Kimmeridgian limestone on an ancient seabed. Vézelay is a smaller area south of Chablis with similar qualities, although the limestone there is not Kimmeridgian.
To the south of the Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise extends from Chagny on its northern end, down past Chalon-sur-Saône and encompasses the appellations of Bouzeron in the north, followed by Rully, Mercurey, Givry, and Montagny.
Directly south of the Chalonnaise begins the Côte Mâconnais, which extends south past Mâcon to the hamlets of Fuissé, Vinzelles, Chaintré, and Saint-Véran. The Mâconnais is prime Chardonnay country and contains an incredible diversity of soils.

Living wines have ups and downs just as people do, periods of glory and dog days, too. If wine did not remind me of real life, I would not care about it so much.
