The wines of Alsace offer many virtues: a wide variety of styles from a palette of different grapes and terroirs; hard-to-match value at the entry-level point; a window into a rich culture descended from its riveting, yet turbulent history; and of course, the ability to pair with all sorts of food, not limited to the region’s own world-class cuisine. Alsace can also provide downright greatness—pedigreed, nuanced whites on par with the world’s best. And without a doubt, the greatness of Alsace boils down to four star grape varieties.
The “Noble” cépages Muscat, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer are the only four permitted to make grand cru wines in Alsace*, and they are accordingly granted an overwhelming majority of acreage within the region’s top sites on the slopes flanking the eastern edge of the Vosges mountains. The cool, dry, sunny climate and diversity of soil types favor a range of possible expressions for these grapes, transcending stereotyped preconceptions (e.g., Muscat is sweet, Pinot Gris is thin, etc.) and instead shining a light on the subtleties of soil and the expert hand of seasoned vignerons in tune with their land.
This four-pack dives right into what Alsace is all about, with one Noble bottling from each member of our quartet of experienced Alsatian growers. With Alsace’s Noble Grapes, you can expect:
• Aromatic fireworks in every glass
• Deep concentration and intense flavors without heaviness
• Textures and shapes on the palate that correlate directly with soil type
• Ravishing apéritif wines assertive enough to supplement a whole meal
• Flavors that complement cuisines from all over the world and can withstand some heat
• Cellar-worthy wines that blossom over the years without losing an ounce of freshness
* With the exception of Sylvaner, granted grand cru status in the Zotzenberg vineyard.
