When we talk about wines from the Beaujolais, we often refer to the region’s reds as ambrosial nectars full of hedonistic, generous, and convivial qualities that mirror many of their makers’ own personalities. And while it may be true that these Beaujolais tend to be among the most joyous bottles you’ll taste, behind their cheerful beauty you’ll also find profoundly creative and painstaking vignerons who are not only continuing to refine their reds to become more delicious every year, but are also delving into rosé and blanc with great success.
The striking diversity of the region’s wines came into focus for me on a recent visit. During our first stop, chez Nicole Chanrion and her son Romain, Romain pointed to a few rows of Gamay vines on the lower slopes of Mont Brouilly beneath the domaine that lie just outside the limits of the Côte-de-Brouilly appellation. Rather than make a declassified rouge, an ingenious idea occurred to Romain: he and Nicole would fashion a white wine from Gamay—a blanc de noirs—that would offer a different take on the Mont Brouilly’s trademark minerality. The resulting wine is crisp and refreshing, and a perfect match for fresh seafood, your favorite chèvre, or a sunset apéritif.
Further south in Villié-Morgon, we spent apéro hour with the current generation of Gang of Four vignerons, tasting the lithe and luminous reds of Guy Breton first. Like his friends, Guy might appear laid back, but he is an unrelenting worker, often spending late nights and early mornings in the vines and cellar to make sure harvest, fermentation, and the élevage proceed flawlessly. This rigorous approach pays off, resulting in an old-vine Morgon that is utterly enchanting—it’s as if someone challenged him to take the cooler, high-altitude terroir of Morgon and make a red as ethereal, silky, and elegant as possible. He’s certainly nailed the challenge, especially in the superb 2021 vintage.
Showcasing the best terroirs, complexities, curiosities, and flat-out deliciousness of the Beaujolais, all six wines in this sampler demonstrate what makes the region so irresistible and a perennial KLWM favorite.

Sampler Includes:

2021 Beaujolais Rosé • Domaine Dupeuble $19.00
Pretty, round, and versatile rosé full of notes of red fruit, melon, and rhubarb. It finishes with a subtle herbal note and food-friendly acidity.

2021 Vin de France Blanc “Perle de Gamay” • Nicole et Romain Chanrion $25.00
Made from Gamay, using direct press, this white wine has no peers in Beaujolais. Open this bottle, bearing notes of stones, pear, and citrus, as a refreshing, mineral apéritif or alongside your favorite fresh seafood.

2021 Beaujolais Blanc “Terrain Rouge” • Jean-Paul et Charly Thévenet $39.00
In classic Thévenet fashion, the wine is bright and energetic—a snappy Beaujolais Blanc that tastes like fresh green apple skin with a whisper of gentian.

2021 Brouilly “Reverdon” • Château Thivin $32.00
Precision, soaring floral aromatics, finely etched tannins, a ripe core of dense fruit, and a granitic crunch on the back end are the hallmarks of this momentous cuvée from the Geoffray family of Thivin.

2021 Fleurie “Les Moriers” • Domaine Chignard $29.00
Cédric Chignard’s traditionalist methods have once again yielded a wine that transparently expresses its terroir, right on the border of Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent. It is pure velvet on the palate, with a spicy minerality jazzing up the elegant finish.

2021 Morgon “Vieilles Vignes” • Guy Breton $49.00
The result of eighty-year-old vines, excellent vintage conditions, and many sleepless nights, this is a spicy, stony, impeccably refined Morgon from one of Beaujolais’ all-time greats.

Where the newsletter started

Every three or four months I would send my clients a cheaply made list of my inventory, but it began to dawn on me that business did not pick up afterwards. It occurred to me that my clientele might not know what Château Grillet is, either. One month in 1974 I had an especially esoteric collection of wines arriving, so I decided to put a short explanation about each wine into my price list, to try and let my clients know what to expect when they uncorked a bottle. The day after I mailed that brochure, people showed up at the shop, and that is how these little propaganda pieces for fine wine were born.—Kermit Lynch
