2014 Saint-Aubin “Murgers des Dents de Chien”
Domaine Larue
Long-timers might remember how from the start I looked in all the nooks and crannies for bargain white Burgundies. I needed them for myself and for some of you. The Montagny from Jean Vachet was a huge success, for example. I was also struck by the potential at Saint-Aubin. I visited several domaines over the years—something kept clicking for me and bringing me back—yet never found a source that inspired my confidence. Pity. When Saint-Aubin succeeds, it makes one of white Burgundy’s most charming wines. –Dixon Brooke

2023 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru “Sous Roche Dumay”
France | Burgundy
I refer to this bottling from Larue as their “gunsmoke” cuvée

2022 Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise Rouge “Les Clous”
France | Burgundy
Stylistically, Les Clous is in between La Fortune and La Digoine, characterized by medium weight with more red fruits, smooth but present tannins, and distinctive polish.

2023 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Sous le Puits”
France | Burgundy
Larue’s white Burgundies possess purity, energy, and invariable minerality.

2023 Vin de France Blanc Melon de Bourgogne
France | Burgundy
The grape is better known as the Loire Valley’s delicate, citrusy Muscadet, but grown in the land from whence it’s named, it takes on lovely length and texture.

2023 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “La Garenne”
France | Burgundy
All the purity and energy for which Larue’s wines are known, plus the depth and richness typical of Puligny.

2022 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru
France | Burgundy
With some age, this will develop into one of the most gorgeous Pinot Noirs to ever grace your glass.

2023 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru “Murgers des Dents de Chien”
France | Burgundy
From the most prized terroir of Saint-Aubin, classify this blanc along with the great premiers crus of Chassagne, Puligny, and Meursault.

2023 Saint-Aubin Rouge 1er Cru “Sur Le Sentier du Clou”
France | Burgundy
The high limestone content gives this Pinot plenty of spice and ripe cherry with great acidity and persistence.

2016 Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru “La Genelotte”
France | Burgundy
The vintage, austere and tense in its youth, has matured into the best a perfectly aged Meursault can offer.

2023 Saint-Aubin Rouge “Les Eduens”
France | Burgundy
This medium-bodied rouge, with notes of freshly crushed black cherries and cranberries filtered through stones, would be sublime alongside any kind of grilled or roasted chicken or turkey.

About The Region
Burgundy
In eastern central France, Burgundy is nestled between the wine regions of Champagne to the north, the Jura to the east, the Loire to the west, and the Rhône to the south. This is the terroir par excellence for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The southeast-facing hillside between Dijon in the north and Maranges in the south is known as the Côte d’Or or “golden slope.” The Côte d’Or comprises two main sections, both composed of limestone and clay soils: the Côte de Nuits in the northern sector, and the Côte de Beaune in the south. Both areas produce magnificent whites and reds, although the Côte de Beaune produces more white wine and the Côte de Nuits more red.
Chablis is Burgundy’s northern outpost, known for its flinty and age-worthy Chardonnays planted in Kimmeridgian limestone on an ancient seabed. Vézelay is a smaller area south of Chablis with similar qualities, although the limestone there is not Kimmeridgian.
To the south of the Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise extends from Chagny on its northern end, down past Chalon-sur-Saône and encompasses the appellations of Bouzeron in the north, followed by Rully, Mercurey, Givry, and Montagny.
Directly south of the Chalonnaise begins the Côte Mâconnais, which extends south past Mâcon to the hamlets of Fuissé, Vinzelles, Chaintré, and Saint-Véran. The Mâconnais is prime Chardonnay country and contains an incredible diversity of soils.

Living wines have ups and downs just as people do, periods of glory and dog days, too. If wine did not remind me of real life, I would not care about it so much.
