Meeting Valentin Montanet and tasting his wines, you can’t help but feel you’ve come across one of the freest vignerons in Burgundy. This is largely down to the fact that his home appellation of Vézelay is a blank slate, unburdened by the steep expectations and land prices you might encounter in the hallowed Côte d’Or villages like Volnay or Nuits-Saint-Georges. Even though wine has been made in this outer orbit of Burgundy for centuries, Vézelay was knocked down by phylloxera near the end of the 19th century and stayed down for much of the 20th century. It didn’t really make a comeback until the 1980s, when Yonne Département native and chef of the Vézelay restaurant L’Espérance, Marc Meneau, grew inspired to serve hyper local whites that could live up to his three Michelin star cuisine. He enlisted none other than Valentin’s father, Jean, and Chablis’s Bernard Raveneau to make this happen.
While the veteran Bernard mentored Jean, a Normandy-born generalist farmer up until that point, in the art of mineral and chiseled Chardonnay, and introduced him to Kermit, Jean simultaneously fell in with the members of the Morgon “Gang of Four,” whose reds were—and still are—among the most vibrant and joyous bottles we import. As a kid, Valentin and his dad often drove the five hours round trip to the Beaujolais to visit with these new friends. “I am a winemaker in Burgundy,” Valentin says, “but my heart also beats for the Beaujolais. Villié-Morgon is my second home.”
It’s no surprise, then, that the Montanets’ Domaine de La Cadette produces whites inspired by the Raveneaus’ classic Chablisien approach to Chardonnay, and Pinot Noirs and Gamays that teem with the joie de vivre, high-toned fruit, and refreshment you find in the best reds from the Beaujolais. I can’t think of any other producer whose wines embody both schools in such an exciting—and delicious—way.

Sampler Includes:

2022 Vin de France Blanc Melon de Bourgogne  $32
Possibly the best rendition of Melon de Bourgogne in Burgundy, this is crisp, lively, and refreshing—a perfect match for oysters or lightly prepared seafood.

2021 Bourgogne Blanc  $45

The fruit in this blanc comes from the northern Mâconnais, which explains its textbook orchard fruit and crystalline finish. To relate to this wine, Valentin suggests you grab a barstool, a whole saucisson, and a hunk of chèvre, and post yourself at the zinc countertop of a classic French bistro for a tête-à-tête.

2020 Vézelay Blanc “La Châtelaine”  $38
La Châtelaine highlights what may be the best terroir of Vézelay and why this little appellation is on the map in the first place. With a style that hews more closely to Chablis than to Côte d’Or, La Châtelaine shows off a mouth-coating, deep, zesty, and mineral side.

2022 Bourgogne Rouge “L’Ermitage”  $42
Blending Pinot Noir with a little of the local red grape César results in a rouge unlike any other in Burgundy today. The César adds an element of dense, dark fruit and tannic structure, while the fresh, bright, and lively Pinot Noir provides fluidity and high-toned aromatics.

2022 Juliénas  $35

Sourced from an organically farmed vineyard on granite soil, this is textbook cru Beaujolais: very aromatic with loads of fresh Gamay fruit, it flows over the palate with a buoyancy that simply makes it hard to resist.

2022 Bourgogne Rouge “Champs Cadet”  $42
A gorgeous, exuberant, and versatile red Burgundy, evoking red berries, a hint of black tea, and spices.

Inspiring Thirst

A good doctor prescribed the wine of Nuits-Saint-Georges to the Sun King, Louis XIV, when he suffered an unknown maladie. When the king’s health was restored the tasty remedy enjoyed a vogue at court. Lord, send me a doctor like that!
