Autumn is a magical time of year. In Provence, where I grew up, it began with harvest: the loud roar of tractors plodding along the road, bins full of grapes in tow, kicked off the season. Before long, the vines turned from lively green to a grippingly beautiful and morose shade of red; shortly thereafter, the first chill made its presence felt at sundown, bringing the radiator out of its yearly hiatus and inviting flickering fireplace blazes that restored comfort and complacency to the frigid household. Outside, more fires flared daily, as farmers dotted the pastoral landscape with smokestacks and saturated the air with the earthy smell of burnt vine cuttings and dead leaves.
    No matter where you live, Autumn has its own special sights, sounds, and smells. The air simply feels different. We crave comfort and warmth, all while appreciating the serene beauty that foreshadows the bleakness of oncoming winter. Fall colors our perceptions in the same way it paints the scenery with its own unique brushstroke. It impacts the way we feel, think, eat, and drink.
