What a difference a day makes! Last weekend, while cleaning up the garden after our abundant rains, I planned to rip out last year’s tomato plants (put in the ground far too late and woefully unproductive) but didn’t get to the final bed before darkness hit. By the next morning, I found the formerly doomed plant was covered in blossoms, sure to be a bumper crop of Sweet 100s by summer! A reprieve was granted.
A similar robust flowering has occurred at our local farmers’ markets. Here in California, it seems like suddenly the piles have grown higher, the green hues more varied and vivid, and the accompanying rainbow posies perch everywhere like a hundred fancy ladies’ hats.
It’s also time to lighten up our palate after a long winter of ponderous reds and weighty whites and to turn to fresher wines with a good dose of vim and vigor that pair well with the bounty of spring produce cropping up (see what I did there?). To that end, we’ve put together a 4-pack sampler of sprightly and dynamic wines with suggestions for spring vegetable-inspired pairings. So head out to the market or garden, get cooking and drink in the joys of spring!

Sampler Includes:

2017 Pouilly-Fumé “Vieilles Vignes” • Regis Minet $26.00
Classic flinty, mineral-driven Sauvignon Blanc, perfect to pair with a Thai asparagus salad, artichokes à la barigoule, or English pea risotto.

2017 Riviera Ligure di Ponente Vermentino “Vigneto Isasco” • Punta Crena
$28.00
Savory and lemony with a slightly bitter finish, a grand choice for grilled spot prawns with green garlic butter sauce, goat cheese and pesto torta, or snap pea and fava leaf tempura.

2017 Bardolino Chiaretto • Corte Gardoni
$14.00
Juicy and bright, ruby-tinted rosé, with aromas of black cherries and delicate spring flowers, a super accompaniment to grilled fennel salad with shaved parmesan, leek, spinach and ham quiche, or fava bean hummus with scallion flatbread.

2017 Bourgueil “La Dilettante” • Catherine & Pierre Breton $34.00
Energetic and snappy Cabernet Franc, softly spicy and herbal–an excellent choice with morel and ramp Welsh rarebit, arugula and mint pesto gnocchi, or stinging nettle and prosciutto pizza.

Terroirs

Great winemakers, great terroirs, there is never any hurry. And I no longer buy into this idea of “peak” maturity. Great winemakers, great terroirs, their wines offer different pleasures at different ages.
