2016 Condrieu
Lionel FauryFor many years Condrieu was considered one of the premier white wines of France. It is the birthplace of the beguiling Viognier grape and the home of its greatest expression. Lately, the appellation has suffered from global warming, coupled with a shift toward more new wood and a general preference for riper, more obvious wines. The result has been an increasingly one-dimensional wine in Condrieu—decadent and unctuous but lacking in delineation, balance, and refreshment. The humble and authentic Condrieu produced by Lionel Faury in Chavanay turns this unfortunate trend completely on its head. Vintage after vintage, he produces highly perfumed, well-balanced, utterly delicious Condrieu with its elegance intact—rounded, freshening, deep, fine, and exotic.

About The Producer
Lionel Faury
Along the steep, narrow valley that traces the northern Rhône, the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph take their place among the great wines of France, and Domaine Faury is one of the region’s most artisanal producers. When Philippe Faury took over the domaine in 1979, the family was selling wine, peaches and cherries, and the bulk of their clientele was local. Over the years, Philippe increased their holdings to over 11 hectares and began to sell internationally. He shared his savoir faire with his son, Lionel. Since 2006, Lionel has taken over the reins, though father and son still work side by side. Every method they use encourages the grape towards greatness with the ultimate respect for its fragility.

Great winemakers, great terroirs, there is never any hurry. And I no longer buy into this idea of “peak” maturity. Great winemakers, great terroirs, their wines offer different pleasures at different ages.
