2004 Barbera del Monferrato Superiore “Valpane”

Cantine Valpane

2004 Barbera del Monferrato Superiore “Valpane” Cantine Valpane - Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant

An aged red from Piedmont…we must certainly be talking about Nebbiolo, vero? Not today: this offer takes us to the Monferrato hills, northeast of the fabled Langhe, where cheaper vineyard land and an ancient tradition of grape-growing yield some of Italy’s finest values. Barbera is the star vitigno here, and the most compelling renditions of the grape have the structure and depth of flavor to evolve for many years after release.
Pietro Arditi of Cantine Valpane likes to release his reds only when they are ready to drink, and for his top bottling, that means holding the wine back for several years. He raised the 2004 Valpane for over two years in casks and barrels of various sizes, blended in a dollop of Freisa for its delightful raspberry perfume, and then let the wine rest an additional five years in bottle before releasing it.
Today, this humble country red is in its prime: still full of life with hints of ripe fruit, it has developed spice nuances and notes of dried flowers, while the texture is smooth as velvet over a deep, chewy core. Pietro’s hearty Barberas show exactly what the grape is capable of in the right hands, and this beauty is proof that there are indeed great ageable reds to be found in Piedmont outside the Langhe. –Anthony Lynch
