I’ve had two memorable red wine moments recently while dining out. Neither was remarkable because of the rarity of the bottle, nor the prestige of the appellation. The meal and the ambiance weren’t particularly glamorous (a burger, curbside on a sweltering NYC afternoon, and a cheese plate at a local bar in Florida on a humid evening!) but the wines—slightly rustic, hearty, and grippy—were served so perfectly chilled they frosted up my glass, and as they warmed to the outside heat, began to dazzle with beads of condensation. Such unexpected refreshment and respite! In the spirit of even hotter days to come, and the barbecues that follow, we have put together two samplers: one featuring all reds, the other without. You can be confident that the red version includes options—whether it’s the dark and brooding Irouléguy from Domaine Arretxea, or the smoky and firm Fumin from Feuillet—that will shine when pulled from an ice bucket and paired with grilled meats like tender steaks and plump sausages. Expect an assortment of chillable earthy reds that work with lighter fare too, like skewered fish brochettes and herby grain salads. Since a meal wouldn’t be complete without a range of wine colors, the second sampler pack includes a Sicilian sparkler from Riofavara, as well as—forgive the hyperbole—perhaps the only rosé you’ll need this summer: Fontsainte’s 2019 Gris de Gris, which is so superb, I can’t recall what I like about other rosés. Further inspired by poolside lounges and beachy picnics, we’ve included bottles to conjure up the sea, like Punta Crena’s Matàossu from coastal Liguria, or the Bianco Gentile from Corsica’s Antoine-Marie Arena, which rightfully tastes like sunshine tempered by a salty breeze. Whatever your needs may be in the great outdoors, your backyard, on a porch, or a rooftop this summer, we’ve got you covered. Collect one—or both—and finally remove from your to-do list that nagging chore, “restock summer wines.” Check!
